Preface II

The word, “Shoushan Stone”, naturally reminds us of the invaluable Tianhuang stone royal stamp.  After meeting Tim Hui, and attending the Shoushan Stone Art Exhibits, I realize that the sculptures of naturally coloured stones have a much broader spectrum of beauty and value.

The traditional stone stamp may also be admired for its own sake.  For those who purchase customized stamps, they often consider a stone according to its utility as well as its shape, luster, and clarity of design.  The complexity of the sculpting and rarity of the stone determine the ultimate value.

The development of “Shoushan Stone Art” relies on the artist’s technique, experienced appraisal of the stone, as well as knowledge from education.  The challenge is to take advantage of the natural colours and beauty of the stone in the resulting sculpture, which many manifest as a picture of a scenic landscape or lively flowers, birds, wild animals, or insects.  The unique style of the individual artist further enhances the originality of every work of art – all the more reason for admiration and collection.

One may note that the future of “Shoushan Stone Art” relies not only upon the talent and hard work of the artists, but also upon the effort and dedication of people like Tim Hui in promotion and marketing.  The success would not have been possible if either one is lacking.
