New Epoch
In
general, Shoushan Stone Art can be classified
under two different categories, namely the tradition and the
modernity. The traditionalists
emphasize the quality of the stone: clarity, translucency, smoothness and
purity. The modernists focus on the
artistic point of vies: sharp contrast in colour,
clear and lively setting, prefect and exquisite skills, as well as creative
and imaginative theme.
It is
foreseeable that new collectors will switch the trend from tradition to
modernity. However, it is essential
to learn from the late Master of seal engraving, Zi-fen
CHEN, of Fuzhou, China, who had stressed that:
“People have a tendency to value the Tianhuang
stone and look down other stones, and a tendency to favour
antiques over new things. I don’t
think it is appropriate. Each shoushan stone has its specialty; quite a lot of them
are as good as Tianhuang. Furthermore, how can it be praised as the
best both in the past and in the future only because it has a special
characteristic?” These are indeed
valid words of the new epoch of stone art.
New collectors should be well aware of and take them as a motto to
avoid making the same mistake.
